Bayerischer Hof Lindau Review

The historic city of Lindau is located on a small (0.68-square-kilometer/0.26-square-mile) island in the Bodensee, or Lake Constance, and is connected to the mainland by a causeway and railway. The Bayerischer Hof, prominently located on the promenade facing the lake, is close to the epicenter of activity in this medieval city.
WHERE IS IT?
Lindau is at the common border of Austria, Germany, and Switzerland, along the Pfänder Mountains. Its harbor, casino, historic buildings, and water and mountain views make it popular with visitors.
The Bayerischer Hof is at the heart of the ...

Four Seasons Hotel Seattle Review

It’s unusual for me to walk to a hotel but, thanks to Seattle’s brand new light-rail system, which transported me from the Seattle-Tacoma Airport to downtown Seattle in 37 minutes for $2.50, I was able to have a pleasurable walk past the Pike Place Market area enjoying unusually, for a mid-February day in Seattle, warm (15°C/59°F) and sunny weather. The new Four Seasons Hotel Seattle, opened in late 2008, is almost directly on the bay and built in a U shape, which means that 80% of the guest rooms have ...

Lowepro Classified 160 AW Review

Finding the right gadget bag to carry a camera in is a matter of personal preference but there are several attributes that both amateur and professional photographers will agree on: the bag must be lightweight, offer ample and adequate protection, be well-made, and not look as if an expensive camera were inside. The aptly-named Lowepro Classified 160 AW meets all these criteria, which is why I feel comfortable toting my gear around in it.
Lowepro Classified AW camera bags are designed to conceal what’s inside, an expensive camera and accessories, while ...

Siemens Gigaset One

It is estimated that 25% of U.S. households have cut the cord and abandoned their landlines, relying entirely on mobile phone. Many people, however, like the convenience of an old-fashioned desk or wall phone. In a case of “you can indeed have your cake and eat it too,” the Siemens Gigaset One mates mobile phones with the legacy wiring in your home. If you still have a home phone line, the Gigaset One merges home and mobile phones together.
The Gigaset One can be used in either of two configurations. If ...

Chevrolet Corvette Convertible Review

There’s no mistaking a Corvette – be it from 1953 or 2010 – with any other car on the road. For me, the 2010 Corvette Convertible’s silhouette with the top down is the best representation of a true American icon.
Pressing the ignition button gives the driver a taste of what is to come as the engine comes to life with a mighty roar. After such an auspicious start, it was difficult to just drive on city streets (although the ride was surprising smooth and refined) so I made it a ...

Cadillac CTS-V Review

For well over a decade, Cadillac has been an afterthought for many luxury car buyers in the market it helped create since its founding in 1902.
The new Cadillac CTS-V harkens back to the company’s reputation for luxury and precision engineering. Eight years ago Cadillac introduced the Cadillac CTS, the first car to bear its razor sharp “Art and Science” design language, to great acclaim
The CTS-V is the second generation of that concept (a completely new CTS was introduced for model year 2008) and executes so well on this concept ...

Winter Storm Tech and Travel Tips

Weather forecasters are calling for a “snow hurricane” in many parts of the United States and business travelers need to take certain precautions, be they on the road and heading home or heading out on a trip.
Pack for the duration. Be it for trains, planes, or automobiles, weather delays can spiral out of control and can even impact areas of the country where it’s sunny and warm. Take enough clothing and medication for a few extra days, just in case.
Keep your devices charged. Power outages are common and ...

Kindle for BlackBerry Review

Earlier today, Amazon.com released Kindle for BlackBerry, a program for reading eBooks on BlackBerry devices. The software is available free from Amazon’s Web site (it is not available, however, from the BlackBerry App World store) and allows users to read books (Kindle newspapers, magazines, and blogs are not yet accessible by this app) purchased on the Web, via a Kindle eBook reader, or via the BlackBerry device itself. I downloaded it to a BlackBerry Bold 9700 shortly after it first became available.
The app makes excellent use of the Bold’s small ...

Die Swaene, Bruges, Belgium

Die Swaene is the quintessential small European luxury hotel and fits perfectly into the narrow cobblestone streets and centuries-old buildings that surround it.
WHERE IS IT?
Located in the city center, this small romantic hotel overlooks the picturesque tree-lined Groenerei canal. It’s in the heart of Bruges (Brugge in Flemish, Brügge in German) and minutes away from museums and other sites. The hotel has 30 guest rooms, all individually decorated. The lounge is the restored Guild Hall of the Tailors and dates back to 1779.

My room was a bit small and full ...

Vila Bled, Slovenia

Vila Bled, Josip Broz Tito’s former official summer residence and guest house, is on the shore of Lake Bled in the Slovenian Alps. It became a hotel in 1984.
WHERE IS IT?
Vila Bled is 55 km from Ljubljana, Slovenia’s capital, and 360 km and a little over three hours from Munich, the closest major international gateway airport.
WHAT’S IT LIKE?
The hotel’s décor includes lots of local wood and classic mid-twentieth century furnishings. Our room was a large suite overlooking the lake. Each room has a different layout. The living room in the suite ...
