The free Wi-Fi hotspot you just logged into in the hotel lobby to read your e-mail, conduct your banking, or read the news wasn’t necessarily a nice amenity provided by the hotel. In fact, it might have been operated by the well-dressed gentleman sitting beside the potted palm. While you sent your confidential proposal, he was collecting people’s credit cards numbers, user names, and passwords, all while enjoying the ambiance and a drink from the lobby bar.
Referred to as “evil twins,” hot spots that seem legitimate but are operated by …

Sometimes, when you are out of the office, you just need Wi-Fi. While mobile broadband service (which can come built into laptops or separately as a USB stick or USB modem) provides reasonably fast service, it typically serves only one computer at a time. For groups or families travelling, off-site meetings, and even emergency back-up in the office, the ability to fire up a WLAN (wireless local area network) can be key.
The size of a PDA, the Cradlepoint Personal Hotspot converts mobile broadband service into your own personal hotspot. I …

I’m writing this at the Tacoma Sheraton where I am speaking at a conference.
The hotel is tired and faded but it boasts wireless Internet in every room. What the hotel doesn’t promise, however, is that there will be working Internet.
Yes, here we go again. As I sat in my room with a colleague, preparing for my presentation, every tab on my browser was replaced by a Sheraton “Connect to the Internet” tab, which in many cases just would not go away. Only rarely was I able to connect to a …

Last week, we left off with success (insofar as Internet connectivity was concerned) in the Confetti Suite; this after two other suites had no connectivity. Prior to my departure from the hotel (today’s plans called for a drive from Munich to Italy via Innsbruck across the Brennerpaß
as far as Sferzing, and looping back to Berchtesgaden), I passed by the front desk just in time to hear another guest complaining about problems with Net connectivity. He was quite upset (apparently, his room had no connectivity) and …

I start writing this column in Lufthansa’s Senator lounge. I’m about to depart on a flight from New York (JFK) to Munich (MUC). First things first: Lufthansa has the best beer; perhaps I shouldn’t mention this, but they have Spaten Oktoberfest on tap.
But I digress.
I’m going to Munich for several reasons, including client meetings and to participate in BMW’s European Delivery program. The trip also presents an opportunity for me to finally test the Lufthansa FlyNet service (powered by Connexion by Boeing). Earlier this …
